ProgressNowAction.org's "McCain = Bush Tour"

The "Bush = McCain Tour" consists of a van pulling a flatbed trailer carrying a life-size statue of Sen. McCain and President George Bush embracing.

It will travel around Colorado through October, starting with a launch in Denver Oct. 12 at the state Capitol at noon. (See schedule, right)

The hug replicates a now famous photo-you'll recognize it above-of McCain and Bush, with arms wrapped around each other and with McCain's head buried into the chest of the taller Bush.

It's the only statue of its kind in America.

The vehicle was designed by Ben Cohen, of Ben and Jerry's fame, who constructed the huggers at his home in Burlington, Vermont. The vehicle is equipped with hug buttons, a hug soundtrack, fact sheets, and more.

The message of the tour is simple. McCain's policies reflect those of President Bush, and that's why McCain supported Bush 100% of the time this year and 95% of the time last year.

"On issue after issue, McCain and Bush embrace each other, so to speak," said Michael Huttner, Executive Director of ProgressNowAction.org, which is sponsoring the tour. "And not just a little embrace here and there, but a permanent hug, because they've favored the same policies on so many issues for so very long-positions that are hurting Colorado families. Our tour sums up how these two men feel about each other, when it comes to the issues."

Indeed, for Bush and McCain, the hug is a perfect metaphor, because the two hold very similar views on the most critical issues facing America:

  • Economy. Like Bush, McCain puts tax breaks for millionaires at the center of his economic plan and has long promoted deregulation.
  • Health insurance. McCain agrees with Bush about deregulating the health industry and handing control to health insurance companies-while doing little or nothing about the tens of millions of uninsured Americans.
  • Iraq. McCain has been a strong supporter of the war from the beginning and favors indefinite deployment of troops there, despite the cost.
  • Energy. Like Bush, McCain proposed more huge tax breaks for oil companies, and repeatedly opposed investment in solar, wind, biofuels and conservation.
