Lundberg Speaks – Fear, Smear and Exaggeration

Here we go again…a good Democratic initiated bill is rapidly approaching passage, and of course, Colorado Representative Kevin Lundberg (R-Berthoud) must resort to fear, smear and irrational exaggeration in his opposition Link. Lundberg is the champion of all causes of the radical rightwing regardless of the harm it would cause in Colorado, and this is no exception.

Senate Bill 34 is an important measure that closes a dangerous gap in Colorado's concealed weapons law, and restores vital authorities to County Sheriffs. The highly suspicious practice of a Colorado resident applying to an out-of-state law enforcement entity to get concealed weapon permit will end with its approval.

All Coloradoans should be suspicious of someone who would bypass applying to the local Sheriff, or defy the denial of a concealed carry permit by getting one mail-order from Florida (or other places). This is no threat to the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution; it's just wrong.

From its inception this has been recognized as a good bill Link. The opposition of Lundberg and other Radical Right WingNuts is clearly irresponsible. Thankfully, there appear to be enough favorable votes for this bill to go to Governor Ritter and become law.

Lundberg's Rove-Wadhams rhetoric is over the line in this case; "A safe society is a society that can defend itself, not a society that has been disarmed." (RMN, 27 Mar 07) There is little chance that tightening a dangerous loophole that defies long-standing Colorado law will become a threat to Constitutional gun rights. This is fear mongering at its worst.

Count two of fear mongering arises from the Republican false association claims that other states might (there are no reports, threats, or evidence of this) revoke reciprocity agreements that honor Colorado concealed carry permits (legally issued by a County Sheriff). It is far more likely that other states will appreciate a newly tightened Colorado law, and the despicable practice of mail-order concealed gun permits will end.

Regardless of the truth of a bill, and its merit to protect law and order in Colorado, Lundberg and his Right WingNut compatriots will mount opposition. This is not about making a good law for Colorado, but further evidence of Radical Republicans serving special interests above the interests of the People of Colorado.

This one is truly amazing

I have yet to see anyone with a coherent reason why this isn't simply a blatant criminality loophole. Why aren't Colorado's already loose standards good enough?

Even for GOP gun nuts, this makes no sense if law and order means anything to you...

Seeing both sides

I have no problem with requiring CO residents to obtain a CO permit. Getting that permit requires training, fingerprinting, CBI and FBI background checks, and an in-person application process at the local sheriff's office. Nothing wrong with any of that. I have a CO permit myself.

What many CO residents object to, is that once they have been approved by this process - meaning they have a clean record, are law-abiding, and do not appear to pose a threat - their name is then entered into the Colorado Crime Information Center database. Along with the names of criminals who DO have a record and who DO appear to pose a threat.

For what purpose? To alert an officer that this law-abiding citizen with a clean record may be legally carrying a gun? In Colorado, it is legal for anyone to carry a loaded handgun in their vehicle for self-defense. During a traffic stop, anyone allowed to own a gun could be legally carrying it in their vehicle. So what good does it do to enter the names of upstanding citizens into the CCIC database?

Avoiding this database, with lumps CCW-holders with known criminals, is the reason that many people have opted to get a non-resident permit.

This doesn't touch on the fact that the bill will affect non-residents from 25 other states.
