Mike May must be desperately searching for a time machine. That is building up to be the only way he can work his way out of the Stafford-1338 Coercion Scandal.
Rather than squashing this debacle, he's digging a deeper hole even as full revelation uncovers more Radical Republican misdeeds. Yesterday, it was a report of apparent roguish behavior by some GOP legislators and a developer lobbyist. Now we can add GOP leadership denial and the use of a lyin' and cheatin' robo-call by a GOP financier developer.
The facts of the Stafford-1338 Coercion Scandal are growing into a pretty dire picture for the Colorado Radical Republicans. It has been well documented that GOP Radicals are prolific at spreading lies against their opponents during election season, now those tactics are being applied to legislation.
In this case it's the use of lyin' and cheatin' by a Colorado GOP activist/financier through a targeted intimidation robo-call. When you can't argue against the real points of an issue, spread a lie that scares senior citizens. Although the Colorado Home Builders Association and Colorado Concern claim no involvement (the robo-bill was paid for by Colorado Concern chairman Rick Sapkin). Calls to those organizations were sufficient to hang-up the robo caller.
Rep. Stafford's assailant must be close and important to Republican (wants to be a permanent) Minority Leader Mike May (R-Parker). With the pressure on, and Rep. Stafford currently holding the ethical high-ground, May has resorted to the stereotypical Rove-Wadhams mantra of "...admit nothing, deny everything and make a counter-accusation to smear your opponent."
The "don't believe her" playground denials of May are crumbling under the "I stick to my story" of Stafford. May's inability to close this controversy is further indication that that attack on Stafford was a deliberate act sanctioned, or directed, by GOP leaders.
In another reality, he would have condemned the coercion and intimidation of Stafford. His public announcement that the incident has been dealt with would have inferred behind the scenes apologies and some symbolic concession to Stafford. This ain't gonna happen in Colorado.
The Colorado GOP House caucus is showing the signs of an internal purge. It seems that even a pep-talk yesterday by the most prominent Republican in the 2nd Congressional District, Bob "Boo-prez," was unable to curtail the fratricide. Maybe he didn't want it to stop.
The return of Wadhams to the Colorado GOP could mean a circling of the wagons by the Radical Right WingNuts, and any non-conformist (like Stafford) being thrown out. Too bad, that strategy is failing. Rather than fortifying their special interest serving position, the frailty of their foundation is showing. The Colorado GOP is cracked in more ways than one.
