Astroturf, not Grassroots

Noxious talk show host Glenn Beck and his odious cronies at Faux News would like you to believe that these "protests" springing up across the nation are entirely spontaneous occurrences from the grassroots, just fed and watered a bit by Beck.

That's so transparently false that it's amazing any respectable news outlet would cover these things with anything more than the scorn and derision that they deserve.

Case in point, examine a selection of e-mails that have come into my inbox over the past several months hyping their little tea-tantrums... just the subject lines and authors, or this post would be ten miles long.

Dead on!

Astroturf is a perfect description of the post-election doldrums we've been riding on the crest of, Michael. Two weeks after the election, the Republicans announced that they were the party of the 'grassroots,' not long after that Michael Steele had to apologize to Rush Limbaugh for accusing the blivit of not being the behind the scenes titular head of the RNC. But, what's really interesting is that the Democrats who rode into office on Howard Dean's 50 state plan seems to have acquired their own astroturf in the process of becoming a government. Granted a stalled economy is plenty of fodder for ne'er-do-well talk show hosts, but in the case of crises, silence is not necessarily golden as campaign platforms collect dust. Guess grassroots can go back to bluegrass till the next election.

Thin GOP Deniability

With one exception it seems that the only political office-holders or declared candidates interested in grandstanding at these events are Republicans. The claims of non-partisan by the TEA organizers are truly hollow and cynical.

Perhaps we're seeing another sign of the demise of investigative journalism. There doesn't seem to be a prominent news organization capable of, or willing to (i.e., can see a boost in profit), dig into this farce.

In the end all I expect is another spectacle of conservative behaving badly. We certainly saw enough of that in last summer's counter-protests.

MSNBC has done a pretty good job (at least on their news commentary shows such as Maddow and Olbermann), but the local coverage in cities and states across the nation has been dismal.

"Tea Party Day" has as much grassroots authenticity as Howdy Doody had self-determination.

Results... the American people want results, not rhetoric from the GOP OR the DEMS, their operatives or lackeys. Good press or lack there of will not equal good government or solutions to jobs, wars, economic instability, sound highways, healthcare... leadership is key. There's more truth to 'build it and they will come' than you may think.

What the "tea parties" aim to do is tear down Barack Obama's ability to produce results, because these corporate interests don't want results. They're perfectly happy in George W. Bush land, and they're very sore that they lost.

So they sow a bunch of faux outrage to make it look like they have a movement, and then they change the media coverage to make it look like people really wanted MORE Bush.

You may thing media coverage doesn't matter, but it does. There are 535 members of Congress, most of whom don't have the funds to do scientific polling on a daily basis until election season to find out if they're doing what people want. They can't trust the phone calls and letters they get, because 99% of those are astroturf. They can't trust what the lobbyists tell them. So the only place left is the media and what the media says about what people are saying and thinking.

Coverage counts.
