Because I'm just that twisted, I subscribe to all of the right-wing e-mail lists to see what they are saying about us. This week's gem comes from "Christian" news source OneNewsNow, dated February 13th, about a woman who was allegedly kicked off the basketball team at Central Michigan University for being heterosexual.

OneNewsNow.com poll

More interesting than the content of the story is the included poll in which 63.4% of over 30,000 respondents indicated that their number one issue with the story is that only the far right is covering it and that "the mainstream media would be all over this if the roles were reversed," The only problem with that is that the mainstream media was "all over this" long before OneNewsNow picked it up.

This is just a selection of the hundreds of sources that picked it up before the "Christian" OneNewsNow:

February 10:

  • Chicago Tribune
  • FOX News
  • Detroit Free Press
  • Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Detroit Free Press (again)
  • Flint Journal
  • Sports Illustrated
  • Seattle Post-Intelligencer
  • KSL-TV (Utah)
  • Minneapolis Star-Tribune
  • San Jose Mercury News
  • Greenwich Time (CT)
  • International Herald Tribune (France)
  • Lebanon Daily News (PA)
  • KTAR-TV (AZ)
  • Denver Post
  • Monterey County Herald (CA)
  • KWGN-TV (Denver)
  • Post-Standard (Syracuse)

That's just the oldest three pages of the 21 pages of stories on Google News about this woman's lawsuit. The "mainstream media" had, in fact, been "all over this" since long before the propaganda organ of the religious right insinuated otherwise in its worthless poll.

OneNewsNow also conveniently forgot to mention that the university says the woman's claim of discrimination based on sexual orientation has no merit and that her scholarship revocation has already been appealed and upheld by an independent review board.

But the telling thing, I say, is that a large majority of this right-wing outlet's readers seems to have cloistered itself from the world, choosing to only get its news from a source that will spoon-feed it in neatly sized, pre-chewed bites. If they hadn't, they would have seen it on TV, read it in the newspaper, seen it in Sports Illustrated, or read it on one of the hundreds of news sites on the internet and answered the question differently.

These are the people we will never reach with TV ads, news coverage, Will and Grace, or any method other than personal contact. These peope live with a siege mentality because the religious overlords in their tightly walled-off imaginationland tell them that they are under constant attack from the real world.

Projection

There's a belief afoot that says the extremists in the republican party are, and have been "projecting" their own moral shortcomings onto the rest of the world, and in particular the "liberal" M.S.M. The very things the hysterical right accuse of their imagined enemys are the things that they themselves have practiced for many years.
