Gasoline Consumption in Texas

.....on another thread where I mentioned annual gasoline consumption in Colorado. 49,635,000 barrels or 2,084,670,000 gallons (2.084 billion gallons)

Texas consumes 256,552,000 barrels of gasoline per year. A whopping 10.775 billion gallons. They are the number one state in the union for gasoline consumption, number two is Florida at 181 million barrels or 7.602 billion gallons. Sounds like Texas has too many cornfield Cadillacs.

California uses less gasoline than Colorado coming in at 35 million barrels or 1.478 billion gallons. The population of California exceeds Texas by 12 million or two and half Colorados. Sounds like we need to Californicate Colorado.

Gasoline consumption

Mike, not sure what the source of the data you cited is, but it didn't seem plausible that California would use less gasoline than Colorado. So I looked it up on the EIA website and here's what I found (Avg. Gallons per day x 1000 in 2008) and calculated the gallons per day per person according to the Census 2008 population estimate:

CA: 7,976.3 (4.6 gal/day/person)
CO: 1,178.1 (4.2 gal/day/person)
FL: 5,343.3 (3.4 gal/day/person)
TX: 6,911.6 (3.5 gal/day/person)

Now that's motor fuel gasoline, not diesel, and it's divided by the gross population, which includes people who don't drive because they might be too young or because they take public transportation. I think your point stands, as we're clearly not doing the best among the four states, but Texas and California seem to be inverted.

I was shocked as well, now on the same site it breaks down the other sources of energy as well as alternative fuel vehicles in which they are #1. See California energy data below the state rankings, they certainly are a huge energy user and a huge alternative energy producer.

The source I quoted was:

Eroneous California Data
By Mike Collins Sep 22nd 2009 at 10:41 am EDT (Updated Sep 22nd 2009 at 10:41 am EDT)
I was shocked by the initial data on California, it turns out that the state uses 370 million barrels of gasoline/ 15.540 billion gallons. A substantial amount above Texas consumption.
