Read this on the "Woman faces fines for wreath peace sign" by AP.

Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. He said some residents have also believed it was a symbol of Satan. Three or four residents complained, he said...

The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything. Kearns fired all five committee members.

Now who has the political agenda: Lisa Jensen or Bob Kearns?

just Another Conservative Colorado Whacko
By Ralph T Nov 27th 2006 at 6:54 pm EST
Bob Kearns is just the latest in a long-line of radical conservative Colorado whackos oppressing their twisted views onto others. I thought laws were passed to reign in the authoritarian oligarchies that typify most of the petty fiefdoms that are Colorado's modern HOAs.

During my three years on a HOA Board (19-months as President) I was constantly horrified by the reports of deplorable practices by other HOAs. We didn’t have covenants, an architectural correctness committee, or fines and liens we could levy against our neighbors. Needless to say, I was quite pleased when my wife’s priority house for our move to Loveland was in a non-HOA neighborhood.

I wouldn’t be surprised that Mr. Kearns is one of those feudal HOA Presidents who was installed by the developers to protect property values. Then, the County Commissioners or City Council provided him with some kind of Local Improvement District or Metro District to siphon off tax dollars for their landscaping beautification projects to make the sales brochures look better.

The abuses that are allowed in the current alignment of HOAs, County Commissioners, LIDs and Metro Districts undermine representative government and enable radicals like Kearns. Unfortunately, Lisa Jensen is very likely the only resident with enough spine to stand-up to him.

20-Seconds of Infamy
By Ralph T Nov 27th 2006 at 11:48 pm EST
I guess Bob Kearns is the kind of HOA President you want; if, your highest desire is to have your community ridiculed on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann."

Get a clue Kearns made the "Oddball" segment tonight (Monday). It is truly incredulous that Kearns would launch a fear and smear campaign to suppress a Peace Sign Christmas Wreath. Smear; that he would twist an iconic American cultural item into an unpatriotic, even treasonous anti-war protest, and fear; as he alleges some kind of mystic occult connection.

Is the talent pool so shallow in Pagosa that Bob Kearns is the brightest bulb available to hold the job of HOA President? Or is he truly on his own campaign of maniacal oppression with only Lisa Jensen left to stand their ground.

The second day of reporting
By Ken Nov 28th 2006 at 4:08 pm EST
I was watching some of the local newscasts last night. The reporting is much better because at least one station has the fact that Kearns was acting on his own and the architectural board of the HOA resigned (not fired as reported by AP).
