But there is a rumor floating in DC that Republicans are seeking to oust Cheney and install Fred Thompson, both to alleviate the hemorrhaging and to basically self-select a candidate with the power of the incumbency and clear the primary field.

It sounds like hogwash to me, but if there's truth to it, I may yet jump on the impeachment bandwagon.

I say I think it's hogwash because I don't think there's a shred of a chance that Cheney would leave willingly, no matter what the pressure is. This is as much about personal power and enrichment for him as it is partisan loyalty, if not much more.

But if there is such a groundswell and the Republicans are serious about getting rid of him and he refuses to go, then we might start seeing some of those 17-20 votes we'd need in the Senate to remove him, and then we can go from considering whether removing him is a possibility and on to the hows and whys and whethers.
