Fun for the new Mayor; his budget plan is out for one day, and WHAM!...
On Monday, John Hickenlooper unveiled a proposal to trim $34.4 million from next year's budget as the city grapples with steep deficits.
Included is a proposal to cut the senior property-tax rebate program from $1.7 million to $850,000 in 2004, halving rebates for people like Esparza.
"I don't think it's fair," she said. "Everything is going up and everything is going to hell."
Social service advocates also lambasted the proposed budget Tuesday, contending that services for elderly, disabled and abused children will be severely hurt.
Some Denver City Council members urged Hickenlooper to reconsider the property-tax rebate cut.
Phase it in, Hick, and move on. (Ms. Esparza's gas bill is going to double this year, too...)
