Fidelity Pledge, and status, here. (2 Days, 0 Pledges received)
The 39 elected officials in Colorado who support Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave's ban on gay marriage should sign a public "fidelity pledge" in their own relationships, a liberal group said Tuesday.
The Rocky Mountain Progressive Network called on Republican officials "who want to bring these laws into our bedrooms" to sign a pledge that says "each person who violates that commitment undermines this institution."
"We ask the supporters of the Federal Marriage Amendment, who claim to be protecting marriage, to pledge that their conduct is consistent with their rhetoric," said Michael Huttner, the group's executive director.
Huttner said at a news conference that he is asking Gov. Bill Owens, who is separated from his wife, Francis, to sign the pledge.
..."The governor is in Washington, hasn't seen it and therefore can't have any reaction to it at this point," said Dan Hopkins, Owens' spokesman.
Rep. Kevin Lundberg, who is sponsoring a resolution calling for support of Musgrave's proposed constitutional amendment, said he wouldn't play political games by answering whether he would sign.
...Huttner was joined at the news conference by a rabbi and a Methodist minister. Rabbi Joel Schwartzman, of Denver, said Americans are sick of officials trying to legislate conduct, even while believing in the sanctity of marriage.
"Most of us wish our congressional representatives would stick to the business of American government and stop trying to dictate morality, ramming their religious beliefs down our collective throats," he said.
The Rev. Bill Kirton, of Cameron United Methodist Church, said Musgrave's amendment isn't about marriage but power.
"It is an attempt to undermine the very document that preserves our freedom, to enable those who want absolute power to subvert liberty and justice for all," he said.
Huttner said that the name of each lawmaker who has or hasn't returned the pledge will be posted on the Rocky Mountain Progressive Network Web site, www.rmpn.org.
