The JeffCo Treasury Mess - RePaschall
| By JB - Jun 10th, 2005 at 11:54 pm EDT |
Remember a year or so ago, when Jefferson County (the largest county in Colorado) Treasurer Mark Paschall got into all sorts of hot water for among other things...
1. Blowing up the budget to furnish his digs and buy a hot ride
2. Not showing up much for work
3. Hiring Independence Institute cronies to non-jobs to lobby for TABOR
4. Distributing right wing religious material(remember 'jury nullification'? as in, if you disagree as a juror, just ignore the judge and the law?)in the county courthouse?
5. Hijacking the county web site in order to lobby...
You may not recall that Paschall is a career GOP poll, one of the many constantly recycled GOPers in Colorado who've never had )and could never hold) an honest job. (Hmm, let's think... names, names. Holtzman? Owens? Hillman? Tim Foster? the list goes on and on...)
Well it turns out that while abusing and ignoring his taxpayer-paid position, JeffCo's finances have gone to heck in a handbasket.
Which is startling to this JeffCo taxpayer -- whose property assessment just came in 60% higher than last year's... (unfortunately having zero to do with the actual market, which is slow and flat...)
The Post should dig deep into Paschall's abuse of his position .. and he should be gone...
Folks, this is what we get when one-party right-wing incompetents rule...
A Denver Post investigation of records going back to 2001 found millions of dollars in transactions that have slipped through county departments without competitive bidding, close supervision or binding contracts. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in transactions were made without department directors examining the paperwork, and more than $21 million has been charged to county credit cards - a process that in Jeffco involves less scrutiny than the traditional route of purchase orders.
