Our referendum effort has already made the front page of the Times-Call:
http://www.timescall.com/Local-Story.asp?ID=3072.
The meeting last night went very well. We came up with some firm action items for continuing the fight against the City Council's irresponsible decision to annex Union, which flies in the face of the City's own development plan.
The most important item right now is the referendum. The final annexation ordinance has not yet been published, although publication is expected in the new few days. As soon as the ordinance is published, the clock starts ticking...we'll have 30 calendar days to gather signatures.
We need to reach out to all Longmont residents, starting with the 880 of us who signed the original petition, which the City Council dismissed so thoughtlessly. Let's use this opportunity to educate the public about the FACTS of this issue. The referendum is a great chance to disseminate information, focus our town, and hopefully overturn the City Council's decision. We're setting a historic precedent simply by attempting a referendum, so let's keep our momentum going!
If you talk about the referendum with friends, family, or colleagues - and I hope you will! - focus on the facts. Traffic, taxes, the environment, water, city services, infrastructure, school overcrowding, housing market, the violation of Longmont's growth plan and budget austerity measures, etc. These are not Democratic or Republican issues; these are not progressive or conservative issues. These are issues that affect all Longmont residents. If the City Council won't examine these issues, then it's up to us, the people. Annexation does not equal control unless the City exerts responsible control. Thus far, the City Council hasn't exercised that control...so again, it's up to us.
Let's focus on the referendum and run a smooth, clean, and factual campaign to preserve Longmont's unique character.
Cheers,
Jen
