Denver: ProgressNowAction called on Bob Beauprez's likely running mate, Secretary of State Gigi Dennis, to recuse herself from overseeing the qualifying petition process of Beauprez's primary election opponent Marc Holtzman.
Dennis has been vying to be Beauprez's running mate and was reported as the top nominee for his lieutenant governor in the January 25, 2006 edition of the Rocky Mountain News.
"We call on Gigi Dennis to recuse herself from this process," stated Michael Huttner, Executive Director of ProgressNowAction. "As Dennis is vying to be Beauprez's running mate, she has a clear conflict of interest in overseeing Beauprez's opponent."
Under Colorado revised statutes (1-1-107), no person while serving as secretary of state shall serve as the highest ranking official, whether actual or honorary, in the campaign of any candidate for statewide office.
"If Dennis wishes to run as Beauprez's lieutenant governor, she should step down from her post immediately," stated Huttner.
Dennis was appointed to Secretary of State in 2005 by Governor Owens, who has formally endorsed Beauprez.
