I was tired of course (8am is not a progressive hour) but I was also really excited and hopeful. I was ready to meet people and learn about them, their efforts, and their successes. The beginnings of my first three sessions were actually a little bit scary. They were largely centered on some of the ballot issues coming up in 2008. People asked questions and got deep into the community opinions that would even allow for some of the ballot issues we're going to see. It was really hard to hear people talk about the intense media saturation by the right wing with anti- labor, anti-affirmative action, and anti-reproductive rights messages that are surely to come. Individuals and organizations also criticized our current messaging tactics and asked about how to take action in the approaching chaos that is 2008 I ultimately learned a lot about the talking points that the progressive community is going to use next year. I loved seeing all the (people) resources in the progressive community, how we can work together, and energize eachother. It was just a little bit inspiring…. But that's what RootsCamp is about right? Our efforts were rewarded by motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists with a lot of honking and waving. The Iraq War was the central issue of the 2006 Election and the public still wants Bush and Cheney held accountable. During World War II Franklin D. Roosevelt had four (4) Republican led investigations going against him. The last finished up after his death. They were trying to prove he knew in advance about Pearl Harbor and failed to warn the military in Hawaii. they never succeeded in making the charge stick. If the greatest US war President of modern times can have this much oversight, why is Bush and Cheney about to get away with lying to Congress in order to get permission to invade snother country? The previous 'do nothing' Republican Congress was not much of a check on Bush's Imperial ambitions and our current Democratic Congress' Leadership would like to ignore impeachment and 'move on 'as they say, and hope it just goes away. What they are trying to ignore is the fact that all of Bush's lies and Signing Statements add up to a huge expansion of Presidential Power. Bush doesn't think the Congress will call his bluff and impeach him, so he will push his supposed 'powers' to the limit. The basic logic, which makes some sense, is that the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds will have a huge insentive to work together if they know we're leaving by a set date. I'd imagine all three groups would prefer avoiding civil war. With US troops there trying to keep some peace between the groups, they certainly have less incentive to compromise on a constitution or other form of government. At the very least, getting our troops out of Iraq might remove the bull's eye on the country for outside terrorist groups. I don't know if this is a solution, but Bush's status quo approach certainly isn't any better.
