"What?", I thought, "that's ridiculous". However, this statement was not coming from the regular ranks in the Pagosa Springs rumor mill. I dismissed what I heard, as speculative at best. However, I've watched while the efforts of an ad hoc committee concerned with responsible growth was squelched under the force of a Town Council's authority this past summer. I've watched while commercial surveyors scoped property lines to dissect parcels for future development in Pagosa Springs. These are not rumors. The mega giant big boxes want to colonize Pagosa Springs. Further, for those of you still not certain why there's a fuss over these conglomerates, you may want to take some time to learn more about the new developers coming to town. This isn't about economic viability, or inexpensive underwear. We're talking about strange bedfellows that come to a community intent on dictating legislative terms to feed their profits. Not convinced? Take a moment to review the struggles we are facing with Red McCoomb's profit-in-the-sky idea of developing a small town next to Wolfcreek Ski Resort. Many thought this was ridiculous, speculative at best. So what happened? We never anticipated the need for greed among these elitist factions. Despite the blood, sweat, and grassroots activism aiding the effort to stop Billionaire Red, he's keeping on the pressure. We're not safe, and the looming threat of these big boxes is something like vultures circling the dying. Do we want corporate profit driven mega giants, like WalMart or Home Depot, companies that would benefit from an extra 8000 patrons, padding Red's coffers in the middle of this battle? Let's not wake up on the 11th hour to realize we've been big boxed at both ends.
