We had about 12-15 people (at the high point) at our
Emergency Rally today at the Capitol.

Not bad considering the short notice.

I sent out about 39 Media notices. I was busy
managing the crew and didn't have time to deal with
them, but we had two set of camera on us. One was a
pair of guys who took a lot of pics and disappeared
before I could talk to them.

The other was NBC who took 10-15 minutes of film but
didn't hang around to talk.

I had told them our delegation was inside presenting
to Romanoff so perhaps that is where they went? I
actually think they were there for other reasons and
we were a target of opportunity. We'll see.

We got a tremendous response from the cars but we had
to work for it. You just can't stand there jabbering
with other activists and not making eye contact with
the drivers if you want to make a difference.

An hour well spent.

We'll be doing our Weekly Vigils to Stop the War and
Impeach Bush tomorrow.....

Wed. at Noon at the Capital at Lincoln & 14th.
and
Thursday at Noon at DeGette's Office at E 6th & Grant

Both events are designed to pressure the Democrats in
our state legislature and the US House to support
stopping the Iraq War and Impeaching Bush and Cheney.

Join us if you can.

For those of us who can't get enough on legislation (through the Thomas site) there is this new website: OpenCongress that was created by the Sunlight Foundation and Participatory Politics Foundation.

(h/t to Talkingpointsmemo.com)

What OpenCongress is about:

  • OpenCongress brings together, for the first time in one place, all the best data on what's really happening in Congress:
  • Official information from Thomas, the website of the Library of Congress, made available by GovTrack.us:
  • all the bills, Members of Congress, votes, committee reports, issue areas, and more.
  • News articles about Congress from Google News. Blog posts about Congress from Technorati and Google Blog Search.
  • Campaign contribution information from OpenSecrets.org, the website of the non-profit, non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics.
From the Sunday Times:

SOME of America’s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources. Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office.

The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack. “There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran,” a source with close ties to British intelligence said. “There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”

A British defence source confirmed that there were deep misgivings inside the Pentagon about a military strike. “All the generals are perfectly clear that they don’t have the military capacity to take Iran on in any meaningful fashion. Nobody wants to do it and it would be a matter of conscience for them.

Read the rest here.

This would moot the retrial of 1st Lt. Ehren Watanabe because it is a matter of conscience for all U.S. military personnel to look within themselves to continue actions that are in contravention of law and how their CinC has led them far astray of our national values.

(h/t to Huffingtonpost.com)

Dave Wolf touched on a number of issues, so I'll address them from the bottom up:

Candidate recruitment is something we've done a miserable job of at the state level, and in some of the rural counties, our organization is nigh on nonexistent. We have some good progressive groups like the White House Project and others that particularly target women or ethnic minorities for candidate recruitment, but I don't think they have much of a presence out in the sticks. I'm thinking the unions have an important role out there because there is a surprisingly strong union contingent in many of the rural areas.

While I feel sorry for the occasional Dem that lives in a 90% Republican-performing precinct, areas like that are impossible to canvass. They are much better hit with phone banks, and believe me they get hit. Voter contact is both expensive and laborious, and when you can't get volunteers to put in time, you have to use the resources wisely. You want your volunteers and paid canvassers to spend more time knocking and talking and less time walking. Nothing is more frustrating than walking past ten 3/3 republican households just to hit the Dem who is not home because she is working three jobs.

The bottom line is that our voters are lazy. You have to hound them to get them to vote. On election day you have to conduct knock-and-drags, and drive them to the polls. The best thing we can do is make it easier for them.

Progressive organizations should use what we did in CD7 as an example. We mounted an aggressive vote-by-mail registration effort. That gave us 50 times as much time (30 days vs. 12 hours) to get out the vote. Ken Gordon would be Secretary of State today if the progressive groups had done in Denver what we did in Jeffco, Angie Paccione might have gained 10,000 or more votes if her campaign had just chased the 30,000 absentee ballots that were out in the last data update I saw a couple of days before the election. Just imagine what she could have done had the campaign actually ID'd the supporters they canvassed and pushed them to vote by mail and chased down every last ballot.

Absentee voting has been the cornerstone of the Republican's magic GOTV effort for years, and that's because it works. But it only helps if you actually ID your supporters, not just talk to them or drop literature. Raising awareness of Democrats is not enough, you have to aggressively target each voter and type them--are they persuadable? Are they solid supporters? Are they good voters? Are they died-in-the-wool flat-earth creationist homophobes with no hope of ever being on our side? Then you can target your efforts both regionally and in terms of message.

The best part of absentee voting is that we can stop bugging those people once they vote. Wouldn't it have been nice to stop getting those phone calls and mailers on Oct. 15th? It's a great incentive for people to turn their ballots in. It also gets the ballot in before the majority of the traditional super dirty push-polls and smear campaigns in the last 7 days and helps inoculate our people from right-wing voter suppression efforts.

And because of the idiotic campaign finance laws, the only way all of the candidates and progressive groups can know conclusively that a voter has been reached is when the ballot comes in as a matter of public record. Most people don't realize that state campaigns can;t talk to Federal campaigns and issue campaigns can't talk to either, and parties can't talk to a lot of advocacy groups and so on and so forth. So while it would be great to coordinate our efforts to set out who goes where, we can't do that. Everybody's going to continue to get hit by everybody multiple times, and I think it's going to wear very very thin in '08.

See this: Democrats Seek to Repeal 2002 War Authorization, Washington Post, Friday, February 23,2007 Link

And this: Calling out Salazar, Feb 22, 02:26 PM, ProgressNowAction.org Link

Now you cannot say for sure that Wednesdays local protest at Sen. Salazar's Denver Office made the crucial difference.

Or that our group's Weekly Vigils To Impeach Link did.

But it is certain that the combined pressure of hundreds of local protests, vigils and rallys all across America is finally helping push the Democrats to doing what the Voters want.

It is not just the large events in the US Capital or large cities alone that is making the difference. It is all of out there with signs, weekly.

The public's opposition to the mess in Iraq is the reason the Democrats have control.

God help them if they don't get the job done right for the voters will not have pity on them in 2008.

I am a life long Democrat who wants the Congress to do the right thing.

Now!

Stop the Iraq War, Bring the troops home, and Impeach Bush and Cheney for lying to Democrats and Republicans in Congress in order to affect the outcome of a Congressional vote on going to war.
Denver motorists responded loudly and often to our 'Show us you agree' sign. We had them honking from two directions at both the State Capital on Wed at Noon and at DeGette's Office on Thursday at Noon ( Two one way streets).

They now know we will be there every week, so they often will start honking before they get close to our corners. We are building a relationship with the drivers who pass these locations at the same time every Wednesday and Thursday.

Their support builds cumulatively. And the effect on the Democratic Congresspersons that we are Vigiling is growing, to Stop the Iraq War and Impeach.

We had hoped to join the MoveOn presentation of protest letters to DeGette on Thursday at 11 am. But we got involved in the 'Tell Foxy' news conference across the street from City Hall and ran late. We got to DeGette's office at 11:45. Everyone was gone.

So we did our Weekly Vigil there as usual at noon. None of the MoveOn people stayed to help out at our Weekly Vigil... oh well. Actually I recently joined the Denver MoveOn Council so I guess one of us was there.

We've been doing this regularly now for three-four weeks. Haven't missed a day. That's Vigiling. You make a pledge to be there every time. The motorists begin to realize you are serious and they begin to really appreciate your committment. It is not a 'once in a while' thing.

It is every week until the Democrats Impeach and Stop the Iraq War. Period! It is very powerful.

One person with a sign can make a tremendous difference.

Ten or twenty can Change a Nation.

We had a little fun with 'Foxy' the fox today... NO, not That Kind of Fun!

We heard that Frontier was doing a Campaign Interview style promo for the 'Foxy' Frontier's Favorite Animal at the Civic Center today across from the City Hall. So we thought this would be great test of our Concept of Instant Vigils.

We flew downtown and did a 'one indian' to their 'circle the wagons' maneuver. The media types applauded my arrival but grumbled later when they had trouble getting a shot without our signs in the background.

Our sign on one side said.

Call Foxy and tell her to
Stop the Iraq War
and impeach Bush

and on the other side

Call Foxy and say
Stop the War and
impeach Bush.

Amazing the amount of eyeballs these signs got.

It was Fun...
you all shoulda been there.

Maybe next time, eh! Join Us.
Impeachment can be fun.

What does it mean to blog? What if you are so good that a political campaign wants you to blog for them?

As many have witnessed the results of being hired can be a mixed blessing because by their occupation there is a huge paper trail that opponents will use.

Chris Bowers has some thoughts on bloggers, politicians and a case study of presidential contender John Edwards and Amanda Marcotte.

I believe that Chris brings up several valid points on what is expected of politicians (and any public figure) by Americans and the gritty reality of politicians (and bloggers) as being humanly falliable and inconsistent; media created images and expectations of the never inconsistent politician; and what does the electorate want versus what should be a realistic view.

I was just at Roots Camp and let's commence the dialogue!
Last week at the Capital we had a good group of activists. Our efforts were rewarded by motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists with a lot of honking and waving.

The Iraq War was the central issue of the 2006 Election and the public still wants Bush and Cheney held accountable.

During World War II Franklin D. Roosevelt had four (4) Republican led investigations going against him. The last finished up after his death. They were trying to prove he knew in advance about Pearl Harbor and failed to warn the military in Hawaii. they never succeeded in making the charge stick.

If the greatest US war President of modern times can have this much oversight, why is Bush and Cheney about to get away with lying to Congress in order to get permission to invade snother country?

We wonder when the Democrats who campaigned against Bush's Iraq WMD lies and Iraq Invasion Outcome will begin to hold serious investigations, hearings and if warranted impeachment? Will it ever happen?

Our group will be there to remind them... and you are all invited to stand with us.

We'll be there...

Every Wednesday Noon at the State Capital ( Lincoln & 14th) and

Every Thursday Noon at DeGette's Office ( East 6th & Grant)
There is a proposal to move this vigil around to different US Reps offices each week day. Tell us what you think about this.

We have extra signs if you don't. If your schedule is tight, come and stay for only a few minutes. It all helps.
This is a story of life imitating art. The consequences are still being played out but television can wag the reality dog. In this case it is the fact that American interrogators are now imitating the tactics of interrogation that they see by such television characters as Jack Bauer, from the television show "24".

From AP: "Human Rights First's ultimate desire is to drive home the idea that torture by Americans should never be tolerated."

Former National Security advisor Brent Scowcroft warned, several years ago, that if Bush attacked another country then Bush should be impeached.

Isn't it time to tell our elected sheep that we are not asking for impeachment but demanding impeachment now.

All signs are pointing to the fact that King Bush and Queen Cheney will murder more Americans because of their insane vision of a America that is the master of the world.

Demand that King Bush and Queen Cheney be removed from office.

Do you want America to be in the same league as Tojo's Japan, Hitler's Germany, and Stalin's U.S.S.R.?

This is the nightmare of living in a dictatorship in which you and I are the enemy in King Bush and Queen Cheney's eyes.

For standing up to their murderous reign it is we who are the ones who still believe in the founders ideals of a government accountable to the people- us!

This is too important to let our nation (never a racist homeland) go down the toilet by the madness of the King and Queen.

Tell your loved ones in the armed forces to stand down!
The is a lot of literature on those that have been tortured either directly or by proxy nations that condone torture in the name of America by Bush, but there has not been much written by or on the torturer. This is the kind of torment that the torturer undergoes after the fact.

Read the writing by Eric Fair and then understand that this is the kind of burden that we have placed on our men and women who work in Iraq/Afghanistan or in the vast world girding web of "black" interrogation prisons set up by King Bush and Queen Cheney. Mr. Fair writes:

I was one of two civilian interrogators assigned to the division interrogation facility (DIF) of the 82nd Airborne Division...

The lead interrogator at the DIF had given me specific instructions: I was to deprive the detainee of sleep during my 12-hour shift by opening his cell every hour, forcing him to stand in a corner and stripping him of his clothes. Three years later the tables have turned. It is rare that I sleep through the night without a visit from this man. His memory harasses me as I once harassed him.

However there was the story of Alyssa Peterson who committed suicide in Iraq due to her duties. Reporter Kevin Elston wrote after he dug deeper than the Army press release:

"The reactions to the suicide were that she was having a difficult time separating her personal feelings from her professional duties. That was the consistent point in the testimonies, that she objected to the interrogation techniques, without describing what those techniques were."

We must,as a nation, come to terms with our military and intelligence actions in Iraq as we have done and are continuing to do so with respect to Vietnam. As reporters for the Toledo Blade Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss investigated the special unit of the 101st Airborne known as "Tiger Force" in Vietnam, during a period of may-November of 1967. What happened in Vietnam is again playing out in Iraq.

As reporters for the Toledo Blade Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss investigated the special unit of the 101st Airborne known as "Tiger Force" in
Vietnam, during a period of may-November of 1967.  What happened in Vietnam is again playing out in Iraq.

Upper command is again stressing that these are isolated incidents but what has been shown in both Vietnam and in Iraq is that command and control is breaking down.  Unit discipline and adherence to protocols of engagement are ignored by the commanders in the field and such behavior is ignored by division level and higher commanders.

Read this about the after effects of Tiger Force's Vietnam actions on the men here.

What do these kinds of actions in Vietnam and Iraq do to the people in the field?

Those affected will suffer for years afterward on both sides.
We think the 'freezing' fog scared off the volunteers today. Actually the sun was out at DeGettes office and it was great.

It was just Ken and I today, but We got a lot of supportive honks and waves in reply to the big Impeach Signs. The people want this.

The Wednesday vigil at the State Capital this week was well attended and we really appreciate your support.

Hope we see you at
the Weekly Vigil To impeach Bush & Cheney and Stop The Iraq War,
at the State Capital on Wednesday next week at Noon....
bring your signs or use ours.

The House will take up the debate that the craven Republican senators held up in the Senate: Judging King Bush's Iraq war.

Also, this little tidbit by Murtha and GitMo (see the end and Pelosi's comment):

Murtha may use the war spending measure to close Guantanamo House Democratic leaders say they'll use the power of purse to "change the direction of the war" and possibly close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, NBC's Mike Viqueira reports. At a press conference yesterday, Rep. John Murtha said his defense appropriations panel will pass a version of Bush's $100 billion war spending request for this year on March 15. Since March 15 comes well before May, when the last brigades will be deployed as part of the increase, Murtha says that would leave time for Congress to act. He also said he may use the war spending measure to close Guantanamo: "I would like to close it." Speaker Nancy Pelosi also called the forthcoming House Democratic resolution opposing a troop increase in Iraq "a first step."

There has been very little mention of the air war in Iraq. I do know from reports last year that the pace of the air war was stepped up since 2004/5 period.

However, the escalation of the war by King Bush and Queen Cheney has already ramped up the air war.

Nick Turse of the Nation magazine writes:

I then pointed out that just last month, in National Defense Magazine, Col. Robert A. Fitzgerald, the Marine Corps' head of aviation plans and policy, was quoted as saying that, in 2006, "Marine rotary-wing aircraft flew more than 60,000 combat flight hours, and fixed-wing platforms completed 31,000. They dropped 80 tons of bombs and fired 80 missiles, 3,532 rockets and more than 2 million rounds of smaller ammunition."

I just got home from our Wednesday Weekly Noon Anti-Iraq War/Impeach Bush Vigil at the State Capital.

Today was terrific !!!! Lots more activists. The dedicated regulars were there and some new ones. Thanks. We really appreciate the support.

During the coldest days we got down to 3 Impeachers on duty a couple of times. Don't blame anyone, That was Cold.

Today we had a great response from the drivers and pedestrians.

Lots of honking and waving. You would have thought from the noise we had 60 protesters there. Lots of response for the size of our group. Of course we are pretty good at this.

I hope a few more of us will turn out on Thursday of this week for the

Impeach Bush Vigil & Protest the Iraq War @ Rep. DeGette's Office (Visibility / Sign Waving)

What does Senator Salazar think of the McCain Doctrine (=escalation)? I read the find at MyDD.com by Chris Bower. He writes that Politico conducted a survey of all 100 Senators on four question about Iraq, including "a timetable for withdrawl".

Demand an answer from Ken Salazar. His response was: No Comment.

What kind of leadership is that? Is that the will of the people? Hardly.

The majority of Americans do not want King Bush and Queen Cheney madness to kill another American in Iraq. That is the bottom line: King Bush and Queen Cheney kill Americans.

Chuck Hagel is just stringing people along. He is like Arlen Spector in being all bark but no bite. People were all excited about Chuck yelling and demanding accountability and what not, but when it is time for the rubber to meet the road...

Let's try this "logic" thing out:

Hagel says refusing to debate Iraq is "weak".

Hagel voted to refuse debate on Iraq.

Therefore, Hagel is "weak".

Time for him to go sell shoes.

is having a MeetUp 7 pm TONIGHT at the Hooked On Colfax Coffee House (w/ Free Wifi ) at 3215 East Colfax Ave, Denver. Anyone interested in the possibility of holding Bush and Cheney accountable for their crimes is welcome to join us. We believe that we can put enough public pressure on our US Representatives we might be able to cause a Bill of impeachment. ( Yes..especially the Democrats we elected... the ones who dissed Bush/Cheney so, who now are Congressmen who have the power to Impeach).

We are doing two weekly vigils so far, one on
">Link
Wednesdays at Noon at the State Capital in Denver and on Link
Thursdays at Noon at US Rep. DeGette's Denver Office at East 6th & Grant. The purpose of the Wednesday and Thursday Vigils is to attract the attention of our State Legislature. our two Daily Newspapers, and the public. We hope that someone in the Legislature will carry a bill to ask the US House to begin proceedings on Impeachment (as New Mexico's Democrats are doing).

We hope the newpapers will consider that if Bill Clinton can be brought up on Impeachment for lying about sex... then perhaps the more serious offense of lying to Congress ( and Voters) just before a vote on War Resolution should require the same journalistic attention.

We hope the public will begin to see that this ( lying to Congress) is a more serious matter even than the Iraq War itself (if that is possible). The previous 'do nothing' Republican Congress was not much of a check on Bush's Imperial ambitions and our current Democratic Congress' Leadership would like to ignore impeachment and 'move on 'as they say, and hope it just goes away. What they are trying to ignore is the fact that all of Bush's lies and Signing Statements add up to a huge expansion of Presidential Power. We need to protect our grandchildren from the future Imperial excesses of the next President RunAmuck, regardless of which party they come from.

We need to put the Fear Of Impeachment into all future presidential candidates.

Bush doesn't think the Congress will call his bluff and impeach him, so he will push his supposed 'powers' to the limit. Democratic leaders in the House and Senate are kidding themselves if they think he will back off. And even if he does, shouldn't he be held accountable for lying to Congress about a War resolution in the first place... to prevent this from recurring? And about the 700 plus Signing Statements. Saying he will ignore US Laws, after taking an Oath to Uphold them.

I'll stop now....

See you tonight at Hooked On Colfax,
and Wed. at the Capital,
and Thursday at DeGette's Office

PS... We've already started getting Push Back, from Democrats no less, about Vigiling in front of DeGette's Office. Why her they say... Well.. she is in a 'safe' seat, she now has powerful positions on very important Congressional Committees. She Can support this without endangering her re-election far more than other Democratic US Reps.

As a lifelong Democrat, I've voted for DeGette in every election and carried signs for her and probably will do so in the future. I think she is Super. However, I think she and all the other Democratic Reps will duck Impeachment if we let them. We will Vigil at other Colorado US Representative's offices as soon as we have the volunteers (all of them).
join us.
