This an utter failure of the FCC to regulate the corporate media so that the information is actually useful for public discourse on the vital issues of the nation. Michael Winship, Writers Guild of America-East, writes:

"CBS has cut the number of full-time news staff by about 60% since 1980, replacing many of them with temps and part-timers. In 1989, CBS network television news employed 28 researchers; by 1999, those positions were all gone. But what do these staff cuts mean to the public? Half the WGA members reported that at least several times a week, they use no more than a single website to check the accuracy of stories."

Michael Winship brings forth this "Network" moment:

"Hours after Hilton's June 26 catwalk to freedom, Scarborough and Brzezinski discussed one of the day's other big stories at their show's opening: influential Republican Sen. Richard Lugar's declaration that President Bush's Iraq strategy wasn't working.

It was then Brzezinski's turn to sum up the day's news. She looked down at her script and Hilton was the top story. She froze.

"I could not get through the first three words without crumbling," she said. "My skin was crawling. This was our lead? On a day like this? To me, it was just the ultimate Paris Hilton out-of-control moment. We've gone too far and we've got to stop. That was all real. There was nothing planned about that, and I believe we got a little snappy."

So what can we do?

Write the FCC.

Write to the heads of CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX.

Call your Congressional Representative.

Tell them that media consolidation is bad for democracy.

Tell them that the union busting tactics by major media players has given rise to news programs that are non-news masquerading as news like Video News Releases.  The disappearance of research staffers from news operations leads to unverified information from sources being used (e.g., Rudy Giuliani being quoted as saying that the Democratic presidential candidates will raise taxes 20-30 percent but there is no newsroom researches to cross check to verify that claim).

As Michael Winship states that it is grossly unfair for major news organizations to have "permatemps" working without allowing them the opportunity to advance to become full time unionized members.  Some of the "permatemps" have worked for 15 years without benefits.

I was wrong in thinking that Abu Gonzales was the "low hanging fruit", but on further evidence and analysis by many well known people like John Dean and bloggers Digby, et.al., I have revised my opinion. I concur with the analysis that Abu Gonzales is the keystone for the Blood King Bush.

Once this keystone is gone then the main impediment to the numerous Congressional inquiries is gone so that the people of the United States will be able to see the full extent of the corruption in the Department of Justice. A big hat tip to DailyKos.com for catching this from MSNBC.com: "

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
A group of House Democrats will introduce a resolution calling on the Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) will sponsor the measure. It will be dropped in the hopper tomorrow."

Yesterday the US House Democrats succeeded in an overwhelming bi-partisan vote that significantly undermines the neo-con agenda of a permanent US military presence in Iraq.  In a VETO-proof majority (399 - 24) this House Resolution limits “…federal spending intended “to establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing for the permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq or to exercise United States economic control of the oil resources of Iraq.”

The perpetual pessimists and complainers continue their claims of inaction and a lack of courage on the part of the new Democratic leaders in the US Congress.  Unfortunately, this shows up too often on the PNA blog linked to narrow, vindictive and obsessive rants.

This is an undeniable success that saves the US from decades of further disaster in Iraq.  There could be nothing worse than a permanent US military presence in Iraq.
The LA Times has this follow up on mobile gas trailers:

"By Claudia Lauer, Times Staff Writer
July 21, 2007

WASHINGTON — A day after hearing testimony about health problems from Hurricane Katrina victims who had lived in government-supplied trailers, members of Congress on Friday questioned why a federal agency was auctioning many of those trailers to dealers and individuals across the country."

Further down the article:

"The agency also said there were no plans to test formaldehyde levels in trailers already auctioned or set to be auctioned. FEMA did not return phone calls Friday asking whether it would perform tests."

(read the rest here.)

Finally, the numbers: 17,000 trailers have been sold this year.
40,000 since 2006.
Formaldahyde levels up to 75x higher than federal
safety limits
There will be no testing done because it place FEMA in legal jeopardy.
No warning labels on the resold trailers.

Mr. Bush and his gang has been shown time and time again to place the curse of money above the lives of Americans.

What do you think of Wall Street workers going to work after 9/11 because the air was "okay" to breathe? Because the EPA gave the all clear signal about the safety of what was in the air for businesses to reopen a few days later in lower Manhattan.

What of the fact that the first responders have had numerous ill health problems from the WTC site because Rudy Giuliani didn't want the "wrong" image about NYC if they wore full protective gear.

What of the post Katrina world in the Big Easy? It is a criminal act of negligence by Mr. Bush. Remember that the entire recovery area by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita are to be used by Bush administration officials for a "free market" social engineering experiment.

For example, from Tompaine.com:

"There are no more neighborhood boundaries. In a market-based model, parents are considered “customers.” And they’re supposed to “choose” where to send their kids to school. But since every one of the charter schools was filled to capacity last spring, hundreds of parents have no choice at all for their kids. Families now returning to New Orleans are bringing 15 to 75 kids per day. Hundreds of kids with disabilities (who are often turned away from charter schools) are being placed in the under-resourced and over-burdened state-run Recovery School District. It’s their only choice.

This Balkanized school system is not closing a gap. It’s opening a chasm. This week, at Frederick Douglass High School (a state-run school), I read students the text of an advertisement for New Orleans teachers that was posted in CareerBuilders.com. The ad read: “Certified teachers will teach in the city's charter schools. Uncertified teachers will teach in the Recovery School District.”

Using an entire American city for "free market" experiments is just as bad as Stalinist "collectivism". The people in NOLA have no choice just as the Russian peasant had no choice.

As Kanye West's said, "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

I would say that George only cares about the 200 or so people who really run the world. The rest of the 5 billion people to him are the yipping barks of minature chihuahuas.
Doesn't this remind you of the mobile gas chambers the National Socialist Party used to exterminate undesirables?

From Soccerdad:

"Let them Breathe Formaldehyde

As if we needed further evidence that Bush and his gang of thugs don't care about anything other than their own power and wallets, we now find out that FEMA let the people from New Orleans who have been living in trailers to breathe 75 times the allowed concentration of Formaldehyde.

From Friday's WaPo
The Federal Emergency Management Agency since early 2006 has suppressed warnings from its own field workers about health problems experienced by hurricane victims living in government-provided trailers with levels of a toxic chemical 75 times the recommended maximum for U.S. workers, congressional lawmakers said yesterday...."

Why does Bush and his gang live while good Americans die in Iraq and after Hurricane Katrina?

I do not understand what the US House Democrats are waiting for on Impeachment of Vice President Cheney. As I understand it Nixon was forced out of office after the House voted the Nixon Impeachment out of the Judiciary Committee. According to the Poll article by AFP Nixon resigned in 1974 when a (full) House impeachment vote appeared likely.   Read More »

Take a look at Cara DeGette’s Colorado Confidential report on Colorado GOP demon-in-chief Dick Wadhams’ most recent speech in Colorado Springs - Link “Wadhams: Off the Mat and into the Game … Again.”  Then we can try a basic lesson in opposition research, and what it means to beat “Dick-Wad” by studying his own speech.

There is no doubt that Wadhams has every intention to push the Colorado GOP into 2008 along his classic fear and smear line.  This report gives clear indicators that he has begun to pick-out his favorite Democratic gaffes with full intent to twist and distort them to fit his warped ambitions.

The danger lies in the probability that what he released in Colorado Springs is only the start of his fear, smear and distortion campaign plan.  Keep and eye out, and check your closets, that there are other stories that the Wadhams machine will twist to taint Democratic candidates and Progressive issues to mislead and manipulate the electorate.  Or, at least the gullible media that seems so obsessed with his commentary.

Here’s another example of how the American media misses what is going on.  From today’s (Friday, 20 July 2007) Financial Times, “DoJ’s ‘crippled’ command frees field to do the job.”  The international press evidently has the low-down on how resignations at the top of the Rove/Gonzales Department of Justice have pulled back political interference to the point that the staff in some US Attorney Offices are now actually able to do their jobs.

DailyKos.com has a link to ABCNews.com about an even bigger escalation of the war in Iraq. But I believe that this escalation is to set the stage for an iminent war with Iran. The new war will be tied to an attack in the US.

Here is what DailyKos blogger Darksyde wrote:

"This was the President's last chance, it was bought and paid for at enormous cost in blood and money, and the President's strategy failed. But now, Mr. 26% is trying to weasel another chance, with more deaths, more maimed soldiers, more billions in The Surge 2.0:

ABC -- The U.S. military is weighing new directions for Iraq, including an even bigger troop buildup if President Bush thinks his "surge" strategy needs a further boost, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday.

And if he succeeds in getting it, he'll want another after that, and another, and another ..."

I remember that the people who met with Diana DeGette said that she was adamant about not going to war with Iran.

How will this next escalation of the war in Iraq factor in? Will the Democratic leadership in Congress "cave in" to a further escalation of the war in Iraq that the Bush administration has as an ulterior motive to go to war with Iran (a backdoor way)?

It is time to pull the financial plug on this illegal war in Iraq.

It is time to do some Direct Action on lame-duck Allard because he has gotten a free pass for way too long.

Allard supports a death to American soldiers policy.

Has he ever attended a CO soldier's funeral?

The momentum builds! First Boxer and now Wyden.

I caught this off MyDD.com:

Wyden: "open mind" on impeachment (karichisholm)

It was buried in a local alt-weekly, but Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) said he'd have an "open mind" on impeaching President Bush. The full quote:
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) says he'd rather use the next year and a half to "enact universal health care, achieve energy independence and remove troops from Iraq" but would keep "an open mind" if the House of Representatives passed articles of impeachment, the first stage in impeachment proceedings.

I wrote this in response to a Denver Post article (Link ) on energy companies and the investor class:

"The energy market in America shows the upside down morality that Americans do not share because the energy companies in the free market has a captive audience. The unregulated energy marketplace has shown that the people who are in it are predators that prey upon all their customers. There is no upside to an unregulated free market for energy.

Reading this report shows that investors are complicit in slicing the throats of the consumer because those investors are not interested in the impact of the financial decisions by unregulated energy companies. The investors concern is only with how much money they can line their own pocketbooks with at the expense of society and especially by those who can least afford it.

The impact on the nation as a whole by energy companies such as the now defunct Enron has shown that this vital to national security. As such there should be stringent controls placed upon the whole sector because those companies have a direct impact on our national safety.

We have read stories of retirees and the poor who have literally frozen to death because they could not pay their energy bills over the years. Yet, we as a nation have stood idly by with the mantra of "free market" and "personal responsiblity" thrown over our collective eyes that should never be when it comes to caring for our fellow citizens. This is what is the human bottom line when reporter Steve Raabe writes " TXU and American Electric Power of Columbus, Ohio, have used their nonregulated divisions to sell excess power at premium prices to other utilities."

It is time for politicians to realize that in captive markets like energy the need for strict regulation should be recognized for the good of all Americans. The mantra of "private good, government bad" is a false and in this case deadly mantra that hurts America's economy and is deadly for those Americans are poor and disenfranchised."
The PM of Iraq:

" BAGHDAD - Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saturday that the Iraqi army and police are capable of keeping security in the country when American troops leave "any time they want."

and one of al-Maliki's top aides had this assessment of the Bush presence in Iraq:

"But one of his top aides, Hassan al-Suneid... saying the U.S. was treating Iraq like "an experiment in an American laboratory." He sharply criticised the U.S. military, saying it was committing human rights violations, embarassing the Iraqi government with its tactics and cooperating with "gangs of killers" in its campaign against al-Qaida in Iraq."

This is the 21st Century version of the "White Man's Burden" that colonial power Great Britain had. The "darkies" or "mud" people of the world had to be educated into a Westen Civilization.

Bush and his neo-con cronies are simply retreads from a long ago era.

But do you think that the mass media will let the American people know that the Iraqi people want our troops out?

This is media collusion with the blood King that allows for the deaths of more Americans. (E.g.: recently one of the Denver television stations- 9 or 7- had a very short item on the Congressional vote on Iraq funding and then followed on with a very long story on some Denverite who was joining a mercenary private security company to go to Iraq.)

Call, write, and protest the fact that Iraqis want Americans out of their country, and that they will do anything to make it so.
Colorado's 4th Congressional District representative Marilyn "Miracle Make-over" Musgrave is moving into high-risk territory this Sunday, July 15th. At 6:00 PM she'll be one of the Newsmaker guests on "Your Show" produced by 9News and broadcast on Channel 20 (Channel 9 - lite).

There are a couple of possibilities:

1) That MM's supporters, special interest contributors and staff handlers have been banking up a massive number of soft-touch question submissions for this show, or

2) She has made MASSIVE miscalculation by agreeing to this appearance, and we have a unique chance to deliver a lesson in reality to MM.

Folks it's time to stand-up, brush off those stacks of Marilyn Makes Me Mad press clippings and put MM back in your cross-hairs (OK, make her your target for Progressive indignation for all of the non-hunters/vets). This is just too easy to pass up.

Truthout has this on the U.S. AG who would be responsible to bring criminal charges:

"While Congress has threatened to hold senior Bush administration officials in contempt for refusing to comply with subpoenas pertaining to their investigation into the controversial firing of nine US attorneys, enforcing such criminal contempt charges would fall to Jeffrey Taylor, interim US attorney for the District of Columbia. According to Justice Department documents, Taylor took part in behind-the-scenes discussions involving the US attorneys who were fired."   Read More »

Maybe lawyers like Rep. DeGette will understand this:

"Invoking a privilege is one thing, but telling a person not to show up in response to a subpoena -- if only to actually invoke the privilege -- is quite another. It's not just worse, it's a felony under federal criminal law. See for yourself.

18 U.S.C. Sec. 1505 : ... Whoever corruptly ... influences, obstructs, or impedes ... the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which any inquiry or investigation is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress ... [s]hall be fined under this title, [or] imprisoned not more than 5 years ... or both.

18 U.S.C. Sec. 1515(b): As used in section 1505, the term "corruptly" means acting with an improper purpose, personally or by influencing another, including ... withholding, [or] concealing ... information."

What part of this doesn't fall under the "high crimes and misdemeanors" for impeachment?

Because Bush has done this:

"I just read about the order to Miers not to attend the hearing. Bush may not order her to stay away but he can protect the attorney-client privileged information she may have, if any. She must at least show up and assert the privilege. Were she to divulge any of the client's secrets, she could lose her law license. But she cannot just skip the hearing.

I suspect that the White House fears that a lot of what she knows is not protected by the privilege. For example, if a third person is present, communications between a client and her attorney are not privileged. Just as Taylor today testified about some matters not covered by the White House's claim of executive privilege, so would Miers have to testify about non-privileged information she had, presumably a lot more that Taylor had."

Tell DeGette that impeachment is the final option that Congress has in order for the will of the people to be implemented in the face of a president who believes that he is above the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

From the Gun Guys (via Buzzflash):

"Mike Magnum: Yes, the NRA is Really Supporting Turning Cops Into Felons for Solving Crimes

It’s been great to be back behind the counter of Mike Magnum’s Gun Shop and Liquor Emporium...

But a couple of my ‘ol regulars were upset with my Gun Guys message yesterday about the NRA making criminals out of our police for trying to solve gun crimes...

So, I went looking around on the Internet just to make sure I was getting this Tiahrt Amendment thing right, and sure enough, I was on target. Here’s just one article about how the NRA has criminalized our police.

The purpose [of the Tiahrt Amendment] is to do the gun lobby’s bidding by preventing local officials from using the federal data to track the movement of guns used to commit crimes, and identify ways to stop the flow of illegal weapons into their communities. That’s bad enough, but a new amendment by Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., would require police to certify every time they seek access to the gun data compiled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms that the information is for a specific criminal inquiry only. If the data are used for gun tracing purposes, the police officers could be sent to prison for up to five years.

And then a website titled protectpolice.org outlined how the Tiahrt Amendment impedes law enforcement.

No access to a city’s own aggregate crime gun data.

The Tiahrt Amendment restricts local governments from accessing the ATF gun trace data they need in order to understand and address citywide and regional gun crime trends.

No access to data from other cities and states.

The Tiahrt Amendment prevents local governments and police from accessing ATF gun trace data from areas outside its geographic jurisdiction, greatly undermining regional efforts to control gun crime.

No access to or use of gun trace data for efforts to hold accountable dealers that break the law.

The Tiahrt Amendment blocks trace data from being used as evidence in any state or local civil action—even a gun dealer license revocation.

No access to national ATF reports.

The Tiahrt Amendment stops ATF from publishing reports that use gun trace data to analyze nationwide gun trafficking patterns."

America leads the world in murders by handguns. Berift of common sense the NRA and its enablers in Congress are out to help criminals and impede law enforcement officers from doing their job.

This is reckless endangerment of the community by people who believe that guns are the end all and be all to what is America. Politicians who support this kind of legislation should be thrown out of office.
