URGENT: Quick action needed on legislation to protect higher ed

If you've followed the news lately about higher education in Colorado, you already know our colleges and universities face many challenges. What our universities need are strong, experienced academic leaders that everyone--from legislators to students and parents--can trust to make the right decisions in good times and bad. The most important thing we can do to ensure we get the best leaders for Colorado's public higher education system is to ensure a selection process that is fair and open to everyone in the community. Unfortunately that hasn't always happened in past selections, and there are many stakeholders who share growing concerns about the secretive process underway right now to choose the next leader of Colorado State University. Leadership in the Colorado House and Senate has introduced a bill to standardize and open up to community participation the process of selecting Colorado university executives. There are only a few days left before the legislature adjourns, and we need your help right now to pass this important bill. Click below to send a message instantly to your state representative and senator-tell them to vote "yes" on House Bill 1369: http://progressnowcolorado.org/higheredtransparency Don't wait--the bill is moving quickly through the legislature and will see critical votes as early as Monday morning. It only takes a minute to send your representatives a quick message, but the long-term benefits of passing this bill will be great for our public colleges and universities. Thanks for taking action on such short notice.

Lessons from Salon.com and Dick Wadhams

The past few months have provided a dizzying series of messages in the blogosphere praising or persecuting the new President of the United States (POTUS). Thankfully, Salon.com produced an “over the nation” report on the Republican Party today that deserves more attention, and a more in-depth analysis (from yours truly, naturally). Here’s the Salon.com link - The state (by state) of the GOP Once again, Dick Wadhams’ penchant for media attention provides the clue for how to defeat him and continue the GOP decline: "This notion that Colorado has suddenly become a Democratic state is preposterous. I think Democrats who have a grip on reality know that." -- State GOP chairman Dick Wadhams The lesson from Dick is a hard and true fact of politically strategy from today to 2012, and unfortunately, too many high level Democratic leaders are positively oblivious to the concept. While basking in the glory of Barack Obama’s victory, I am seeing too many messages ignoring recent losses and weaknesses going into future ballots. This kind of complacency and false posturing is a formula for a disaster in the 2010 General Election. Salon.com is absolutely correct by highlighting the dominance of the GOP at the county and community level. Even in Larimer County, the Democratic Party leadership is mute on the loss of a seat on the Board of County Commissioners. Reveling in the glory of former Democratic Party Chair Betsy Markey defeating Marilyn Musgrave is apparently too intoxicating to take a clear look at the dangers of the political landscape.

Upcoming dialogue event and marriage equality direct actions...

Hello Friends,

Two quick notes...

1) Soulforce in Colorado is in the early stages of organizing a dialogue event with an inter-religious dialogue class at Naropa in Boulder. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in practicing nonviolent communication. The event will occur from 7-9 pm on a Tuesday or Thursday evening sometime in April. Please let me know if you might be interested.

2) We are also beginning to plan for future marriage equality direct actions in Denver and elsewhere throughout Colorado. If you or anyone you know would like to help organize a sit-in and/or civil disobedience for marriage equality, please let me know. There will be more info available at our planning meeting on Saturday, March 21, 2009, 1-3 pm at The GLBT Center of Colorado (1050 Broadway in Denver).

East Denver Neighborhood Volunteers for Change

Who We Are We are a group of community activists, dedicated to promoting change at a grassroots level across partisan lines; with the objective to support the Obama administration in its promise of progressive, fair, ethical, and responsible change. Many of our members were active during the presidential campaign. During the campaign we had approximately 350 folks from Park Hill, City Park, Mayfair, Congress Park, and Capital Hill neighborhoods working out of our campaign office on Colfax and Forrest in order to get out the vote for Barack Obama. After the election, the Presidential Transition team requested that we organize house meetings to pull the campaign activists together and begin the effort to organize them into community activists. I signed up to host one of the meetings and had over twenty neighbors sign up in a matter of days. The meeting brought together people who are interested in making our neighborhoods, city, state, and nation a better place to live. We introduced ourselves and shared the issues that motivate each of us. Our issues included alternative / green energy, climate change, universal health care, education, transportation. and getting our troops out of the Iraq war. Our mandate for the meeting was to come up with a project that we could complete prior to Inauguration Day which would have a measurable effect.

You don't like the stimulus? Then don't take the money!

Paul Begala :
If Republican politicians are so deeply opposed to President Obama's economic recovery plan, they should refuse to take the money. After all, if you think all that federal spending is damaging, there are easy ways to reduce it: Don't take federal money.

[...]

Justice Louis Brandeis famously called states "laboratories of democracy." So let's experiment. Gov. Sanford can be the guinea pig. His Palmetto State already gets $1.35 back from Washington for every dollar it pays in federal taxes, according to 2005 numbers, the latest calculated by the Tax Foundation, a nonprofit tax research group.

That's exactly right. According to the same data Begala cites, Coloradans only get 81 cents back for every dollar they send to Washington . And Coloradans are strangled by the grip of TABOR, and thanks to the Bush administration, federal lands have been given away to the oil companies for a song while state and local government have to bear the burden of a boom-and-bust cycle.

So we'll take our stimulus, thank you very much. Colorado has sent more money to Washington than it has received in Federal spending for sixteen of the past twenty-five years. Washington owes us one, and thankfully seven of our nine-member Congressional delegation have fought to make it so.

More Evidence of "Bushies" Burrowing

For several years now the evidence of the Alberto Gonzales gang's manipulation of the Federal Civil Service within the Department of Justice has been well publicized. The fact that right-wing political ideologues were being approved for career professional positions based on social issue orthodoxy, rather than competence and qualifications, is yet another blight on the scandalous legacy of the current occupant of the White House. Today's report in the Washington Post reveals that this practice of burrowing right-wing political operatives into the Civil Service is also in-place in the scientific agencies. Perhaps this is the mis-administration's strategy for making permanent the Republican obsession for combating the truth of science with their twisted political and social priorities. The Center for Public Integrity is soon to release their "Broken Government" study. The fund-raising teaser release promises 120 specific cases. This kind of investigative effort to hold the Bushies accountable as the mis-administration fades into oblivion is crucial. Revealing and acting on the depth and breadth of this conspiracy is vital to the success of any reforms and corrects to the offenses of the past eight years. The Obama-Biden Administration will be stretched and tested to uncover and flush-out these right-wing activists who have burrowed their way into the Civil Service like so many termites. The evidence of these infestations must be met with quick action. Executive appointees selected for positions above these people must be prepared to take every possible action within the laws and regulations of the Civil Service structure to either get them dismissed, or make it too hard for them to stay and accomplish their nefarious goals. Attention to the selection of the Administrator of the Office of Personnel Management will be a key to success in this area. Various Executive agency inspectors general must be supported in investigating these political opportunists. IF they are found to be substantially unqualified for the job description that they were hired to fill, then it should be clear grounds for dismissal as an unlawful appointment. The Obama-Biden appointees who are saddled with these burdens must enforce clear, precise and enforceable performance standards. When confronted with qualitative requirements to enforce and perform based upon laws and regulations that these infiltrators are likely to hold ambitions to undermine and avoid, could more easily force them to resign. Even in its demise the minions of the current mis-administration are appearing to be increasingly unwilling to follow the current occupant of the White House and the vice out of Washington. This certainly adds to the challenge and urgency of establishing the new administration's executive leadership. Too many months and too many acting, caretaker, leaders in the executive departments will make it all the harder to untangle the tentacles of the Bush parasites.

Group calls on CSU to reject Allard as chancellor

UPDATE: Tell CSU to reject Wayne Allard .

Greeley Tribune

ProgressNow has called on Colorado State University Board of Governors to reject Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., as chancellor of the university system.

At the same time, the board said that while it appreciates Allard's interest in the position, it has not had a chance to meet to discuss the roles, responsibilities, qualities and characteristics the chancellor might have.

Michael Huttner, executive director of ProgressNow, a group whose "mission is to provide a strong, credible voice in advancing progressive solutions to critical community problems," said Allard would be "a disaster for CSU," in a press release.

"Allard has been completely ineffective as a senator and that is the last thing CSU needs in a time of dire fiscal needs," Huttner said in the press release. He pointed out that in 2006, Time magazine ranked Allard as one the country's five worst senators and said the magazine reported that Allard "almost never plays a role in major legislation.

"With the new dynamics in Colorado and DC, the last thing we need is a right-wing ineffective senator," Huttner said in the release. "Allard has proven that he has ineffective in bringing back money to Colorado as a senator, how will be any better in helping CSU fiscal needs as a former Senator?"

The statement released from the office of the board of governors said "It's great to have an experienced public servant express an interest in CSU; however at this time it's premature to start a list of applicants. The board of governors has not had a chance to meet to discuss the roles, responsibilities, qualities and characteristics of the CSU System Chancellor position. The board will likely start discussions at their next meeting in early December."

Being the Future - Obama in Fort Collins

Reports are coming in that Barack Obama's Colorado appearances today were record breaking. One Democratic Party insider says that the Denver Rally pulled in over 100,000 supporters. I was within a softball toss of Barack in Fort Collins. One early estimate claims 45,000 attended; it sure looked like a lot more than that to me. The Eastern half of the CSU Oval was filled with people, and more were crowded into the Southwest quarter of the Oval. If I were priviledged enough...I would paste in one of my low-res pictures of the crowd. But, even Barack said that the setting was incredible. The trees surrounding the Oval were in full color. Barack's message has evolved, even from the acceptance speach at Mile High. Focused, positive and thoroughly inspiring. I was struck by several uses of "the future" today. Each time was full of hope and desire for the best for all Americans. Barack's comments were on-target for a number of topics: the economy, healthcare, primary education, secondary education, jobs and how John McCain is out of touch. The program started with a prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and an a capella performance of the National Anthem. Betsy Markey gave one of her best speaches as did Governor Bill Ritter. Other news organizations will have a full transcript of the speach. The press contingent was impressive. But, news coverag does not compare to being there...being there to see the future President.

Threat of More of the McSame

I was just listening to former Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder on a radio show. He made a critical and brilliant observation about John McCain.

His evaluation of the Sarah Palin selection rests on that decision as an indicator of how McSame would later decide on the people to fill the other leadership positions in a supposed McSame mis-administration. This is a powerful indictment of a candidate for president of the US when the nation so despirately needs a clear change of direction.

The specter of Sarah Palin equivalent appointments throughout the US Executive Branch shows no chance of reforming, and certainly not reversing, the criminal excesses of the past seven years. There will be no resolution to the US Attorney firings, and little hope of removing the fraudulently hired radical right-wingers who have been peppered throughout the Department of Justice to undermine, rather than enforce, the law.

This demonstrated decision-making pattern by John McCain is a screaming warning to America. No other fact shines so brightly than the selection of Sarah Palin to confirm that McSame is the incarnation of a third, and perhaps more devastating, term for the G.W. Bush policies.

Considering everything you find important, think your retired relatives who will be hurt if McCain succeeds and leads America down the path of more for the wealthiest and less for the rest. Victory in the race for the White House is critical, but top to bottom electoral victories on the ballot is equally important for our communities and state.

McCain-Palin scoriated by Humane Society United States

McCain-Palin scoriated. Barack Obama-Biden endorsed by the Humane Society for the United States.

Standing on the sidelines is no longer an option for us.

If Palin is put in a position to succeed McCain, it could mean rolling back decades of progress on animal issues.

I'm proud to announce today that the HSLF board of directors--which is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans--has voted unanimously to endorse Barack Obama for President. The Obama-Biden ticket is the better choice on animal protection, and we urge all voters who care about the humane treatment of animals, no matter what their party affiliation, to vote for them.

Voters who care about protecting wildlife from inhumane and unsporting abuses, enforcing the laws that combat large-scale cruelties like dogfighting and puppy mills, providing humane treatment of animals in agriculture, and addressing other challenges that face animals in our nation, must become active over the next six weeks to elect a president and vice president who share our values. Please spread the word, and tell friends and family members that an honest assessment of the records of the two presidential tickets leads to the inescapable conclusion that Obama-Biden is the choice for humane-minded voters.

Paid for by Humane Society Legislative Fund and not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee.

The Myth of a Caring America

To be caring to ones neighbor is innate in humans. One would be hard put to find a small village or town in the past that did not take care of their own. When someone got sick or hurt the village took care of them. This is still true in some small towns in America, but for the most part America has lost its way and systematically turned its back on its neighbors. We have been so propagandized by the Republican machine that half of us believe that we shouldn't have to pay our fair share to take care of our own citizens.

Sure, when disaster strikes like 9/11 we have lots of caring people who give up a lot to help out, and then we pat ourselves on the back and say, "Just look at how caring America is."

What a MYTH! Where is the caring that really counts? When the helpers at ground zero get sick from the toxins spewed into the air, and don't have any health insurance, we say, "Too bad so sad, but I would rather have low taxes." Where is the willingness to pay ones taxes so children won't have to go hungry, and do without medical care? Where is the caring for the millions of uninsured, or the millions of children who are getting a poor education?

I hope my mother, my wife and my teenage daughter will excuse this one - but, my initial reaction holds that McCain is having a post midlife crisis moment here. Now he gets to spend the rest of the campaign on stage with either a blonde or a brunette former beauty queen; sometimes both.

Considering the depth and experience available to him in the rest of the GOP universe I am completely baffled that there can be any other reason for this decision. I am now even more appreciative for the intelligent and practical decision by Barack Obama to grab Joe Biden as his VP running mate.

The supposed VP Debate won't be. With this line-up it is clear that candidate Palin will carefuly recite radical right wing talking points fed to her by the McCain handlers. Even if Biden were allowed in the format/rules to challenge her on any issues we'll hear nothing original.

Thus there could not be a more distinct choice between the two tickets. Looking at the "rap-sheet" provided by MoveOn, American voters can have no doubts of the radical and destructive policies and positions John McCain is accepting by filling the GOP ticket with Palin.

Statement on 10th Circuit's Ruling on Colorado Christian University

Breaking: Statement on 10th Circuit's Ruling on Colorado Christian University FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, July 23, 2008 CONTACT: Michael Huttner, Executive Director 303-931-4547 "We are disappointed by the Court's ruling, we believe that giving public funds to Colorado Christian University is a clear violation of the separation of church and state and urge the state to appeal," stated Michael Huttner, Executive Director of ProgressNow. "That our tax dollars will be given to Colorado Christian University and its President, right-wing activist William Armstrong for his religious crusades should outrage Colorado taxpayers." Huttner added, "this decision will be cheered by the original proponents of the so-called 'College Opportunity Fund,' who have been trying to starve Colorado's higher education system of revenue for years and likely hoped for this exact result. For everyone who cares about Colorado's most valuable institutions, our public colleges and universities, this ruling is a disaster." Read the text of the court's ruling here: http://www.ca10.uscourts.gov/opinions/07/07-1247.pdf ###
