I called my friend to make sure he made it back to Kansas alright. Selfishly, I called for me...not just for him. You see, he came home from Iraq for the second time just before the holidays...and when he is in Iraq, driving convoy, I cannot call to make sure my friend makes it back to his base "OK." I just hold my breath until he calls to "check in" and "ease my mind." Today, I signed a petition and wrote Senator Allard...this is what I said: Senator, I live in Colorado Springs and everyday witness the news of another soldier returning to the local army base, Fort Carson. These soldiers do not walk off the plane to the roaring cheers of friends and family. Instead, they are quietly carried off to the muffled tears of loved ones or fellow service men and women. For several weeks the President has spoke about the benefit of entertaining this troop surge. For years I have taken pause as the glow of funeral cars pass by with another victim of war.
