Let's Talk Some Policy II

A couple of days ago, I posted a summary about David Sirota's book, "Hostile Takeover: How Big Money & Corruption Conquered Our Government - and How We Take It Back". The more I get involved in political activism, the more I realize that too many decisions are being made by too few people that control very large sums of money. Part of me is disappointed that politicians are corrupted by the allure of trips to resorts, the oiling of their election campaigns by big money interests, etc. I guess that reflects my lack of understanding of how that world works.

America's energy policy has been driven with blinders on during Bush's reign. Assisted by Republican congress people who vote as their campaign contributions tell them to, our energy policy has remained stuck in a "pre-9/11 mindset".

Colorado Evolutionary Response Team

Leading up to the 2006 election, I heard about and joined a group called Scientists and Engineers for America. Today, they sent me an email with some information about how they impacted the election. They had a Speaker Series at some universities, used internet banner ads, held a commercial contest, and garnered some press coverage. One of the press pieces they shared was from the Denver Post in early October.

Let's Talk Some Policy I

I've been reading plenty of books that address progressive perspectives. And while I do my fair share of bashing the right-wing, I actually prefer to combine some sort of discussion along with examination of current policies based on fringe ideology. David Sirota's "Hostile Takeover" is a very good example of taking stock of the current landscape and then, looking beyond the present, proposing a short list of solutions per issue. It provides a good framework from which we can begin to address issues that matter to most Americans.

Some incredible news this morning regarding a new education opportunity:
Students graduating this spring from three Denver high schools will have their college costs covered under a new scholarship program that officials say will soon expand to all city high schools.
Tim Marquez is a 1976 graduate of Lincoln High School. He is a founder and CEO of Venoco Inc., which is an oil and gas company

Paccione Project wraps up

A group of folks from Boulder County decided earlier this year to do some work out in Longmont to try and help get Angie Paccione get elected for Colorado's 4th Congressional District.

Along the way , we received some local press attention. In the past month, enough volunteers showed up every Saturday morning so that as of today, the Paccione Project completed its goals.

This morning saw about 30 people show up and we needed all of them because we walked in three precincts.
