While progressives in the Colorado legislature fight to protect and create jobs, once again we're dealing with an onslaught of ridiculous legislation that helps no one. We need your help to get these time-wasting bills out of the way, so our legislators can focus on jobs and the economy.
In Colorado, we respect the right of law-abiding citizens to own guns, and we have sensible checks in place to ensure they don't fall in to the wrong hands. Unfortunately, right-wing extremists in the Colorado House have decided to distract from the real issues, and introduced numerous pieces of legislation that weaken our gun laws.

1. The "Guns In The Wrong Hands" Act. This foolish bill would end Colorado Bureau of Investigations (CBI) instant background checks on gun purchases in the state. While the law requiring the more extensive CBI checks was approved by an overwhelming majority of voters in Colorado, this bill would thwart the will of voters--and rely on the much weaker federal checks that frequently miss important information, such as civil restraining orders. The Denver Post noted a case in Castle Rock in 1999 where a gun was bought by a man with a restraining order that wasn't caught--and used the gun to commit murder. (Denver Post, 1/29/2012)
2. "Make My Day Worse." Colorado has laws protecting crime victims who fight back, but the devil is in the details with this year's attempt to irresponsibly broaden our so-called "Make My Day" law. That's why law enforcement organizations like the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police oppose it.
3. "Gun Confiscation Paranoia" Act. Legislation has passed the Colorado House that would restrict state authorities from regulating guns during a state of emergency. Unfortunately, this bill seems to have been written in a way that it would undo existing gun laws during a state of emergency, and it could actually do tremendous harm in the dreadful circumstances in which it might apply.
The craziest part of all? Each of these completely unnecessary (and even dangerous) gun bills, along with several others, are expected to pass the Republican-controlled Colorado House. Instead of focusing on creating jobs in our state, Speaker Frank McNulty and his caucus have made passing these bills top priority: bills that won't create a single job.
